For over 20 years, homeowners, renters, and businesses around Melbourne have been choosing Moor Room Self Storage for affordable, state of the art, self-storage with a personal touch. In all that time, we’ve been lucky to meet people from every walk of life with all kinds of storage needs. Because we take the time to really talk to our customers, we’ve learned a few things about what gives them a great self-storage experience. We’ve used that knowledge to inform our business practice and we work hard to tick all the boxes. We provide high quality service without the hefty price tag; personal attention; 24/7 access; monitored security and convenient locations.
But there are also a handful of things you can do to make the experience as smooth and trouble-free as possible. So, with our first blog, we’ve decided to share our tips on getting the most out of your self-storage space.
- Make an Inventory
Before you start packing, make an inventory of everything you’re putting into storage. This way you’ll know in advance exactly how much space you need, and you’ll never lose track of what you’ve put away. To help you plan and work out exactly how much space you’ll need, our website has a free, easy to use space calculator.
- Know What Can and Can’t be Stored
Most household items – furniture, electrical goods, clothing, etc. – can be safely put into storage, and you can trust the people at Moor Room to keep your precious cargo safe and sound.
Having said that, there are some things that definitely cannot go into a storage unit. Below is a pretty comprehensive list of those things. Some seem obvious, others might surprise you. If you are unsure, give us a call and our staff will help you out.
DO NOT STORE:
Hazardous materials: Anything flammable, combustible, or toxic. This includes aerosols, propane tanks, fireworks, old batteries, and biological waste. If you’re unsure, ask our team.
Items susceptible to moss and mildew: This would be anything wet (or damp)
Perishable food: Pretty much any food that’s not in a jar or can quickly go off and ruin whatever else you’ve got stored in there with it. It will also attract pests.
Anything living: This extends to plants, animals, and yes, people.
- Consolidate
When trying to figure out how to downsize your space, there’s nothing like a room full of bulky furniture and oversized items to bring on feelings of pre-emptive defeat. What people tend to forget is that many of those items can be dismantled into smaller components. In fact, a lot of the time, the furniture you’re storing is itself designed as storage space. If you’re storing a chest of drawers, small items can be wrapped carefully and placed inside individual drawers. For cupboards and wardrobes, empty them completely and push them into the corners, then fill the empty space with packed boxes.
- Pack with Care
Pack and stack carefully. Choose sturdy cardboard boxes or stackable plastic packing crates. Cover fragile items in paper or packing foam and place them somewhere safe, not crushed under power tools or teetering on edges. For all your box and packing material needs, talk to us.
- Label Everything
Label your boxes as you go. Remember that everything you pack will eventually need to be unpacked. Save yourself the stress of misplaced family heirlooms and time spent searching through unmarked boxes and use sticky labels or a thick marker. You will thank yourself for this one later.
- Choosing the correct size unit
Ensure that if you are intending to regularly access your goods that you choose a unit that provides movement. This way you avoid having to move too many items to find what you are looking for.
We could go on, but that just about covers the basics. If you have any questions, our friendly staff members are always ready for a chat. Call any of our five locations or send us a message online.
